About Deputy

Built to protect farmers, powered by AI

The problem

A single season of too much rain or too little can erase a smallholder farmer's entire income. Traditional crop insurance rarely reaches them. Policies are written for large commercial operations, premiums assume acreage most farmers do not have, and a claim means paperwork, a site visit from an adjuster, and months of waiting for a decision that may never come. For a farmer working two hectares, the cost of proving a loss can exceed the value of the payout. Most simply go uninsured and absorb the loss themselves.

The solution

Deputy is parametric. Instead of insuring the damage, it insures a measurable condition. A farmer describes what to protect in ordinary language, and Deputy turns that into a policy with one clear trigger, such as 180mm of rain in 24 hours. From that point on the farmer does nothing. Deputy watches the weather at their location continuously. If the trigger is crossed, the payout is sent automatically.

There is no claim to file, no adjuster to schedule, and no discretion about whether to pay. The condition either happened or it did not, and the answer arrives in minutes rather than months.

The technology

Three independent weather sources

Open-Meteo, OpenWeatherMap, and NASA POWER are read separately every 30 minutes. Deputy compares them against each other rather than trusting any single feed.

AI verification

Deputy reads the policy in plain language, converts it into a measurable trigger, and checks that trigger against every source. A payout only proceeds when all three agree the threshold was crossed.

X Layer smart contracts

Policy terms live onchain. When conditions are confirmed, the contract releases USDC to the farmer without a human approving the transfer and without anyone able to block it.

Built for OKX BuildX AI Season 2026

Deputy was built for the OKX BuildX AI Season, settling on X Layer. The goal is narrow and practical: show that an autonomous agent reading trusted public weather data can underwrite and settle real insurance without an intermediary, and that the result is cheap enough to reach farmers the existing market has never served.
